What does Cyber Insurance protect against?

Our Cyber Insurance solution brings together more than 40 coverages and extensions across four core areas of cover, with additional extensions available depending on the policy terms, conditions, and limits selected.

  • Cyber and privacy liability: Covers damages and claims expenses arising from actual or alleged security failures.
  • Regulatory investigations and fines: Helps businesses manage the financial impact of regulatory investigations following a cyber incident, covering defence costs and insurable fines and penalties where legally permissible. 
  • Media liability: Provides protection against claims arising from digital content, marketing activities and media publications, including allegations such as defamation, infringement of intellectual property rights and other media-related liabilities..
  • Technology services liability: For technology trades, covers claims arising from actual or alleged technology services liability wrongful acts.
  • PCI DSS investigations and fines: Supports businesses that handle payment card data by covering the costs associated with PCI DSS investigations, assessments, fines and penalties arising from a security breach or cyber incident.
  • Cyber and privacy management liability: Pays damages and claims expenses resulting from any claim first made against your director during the period of insurance in respect of any actual or alleged director wrongful act in connection with the business.
  • Conditional bodily injury: Provides cover where bodily injury results directly from a cyber-related security failure, subject to policy terms.
Incident response and crisis management covers

  • Privacy breach notification and mitigation costs: Covers costs such as forensic investigation, legal advice, notifications, credit monitoring, call centre support, and public relations following a security failure.
  • System and data rectification costs: Covers the cost of restoring, replacing, rebuilding, or reinstating computer systems following a security failure.
  • Extortion costs: Covers costs connected to dealing with, containing, or responding to an extortion threat, with the insurer’s prior written consent.
  • Your business interruption – security failure: Covers business interruption caused by an interruption or degradation of computer systems due to a security failure.
  • Your business interruption – system failure: Covers business interruption caused by an interruption or degradation of computer systems due to a system failure.
  • Reputational harm: Covers reputational harm resulting from an adverse media event caused by a security failure.
  • Critical service provider business interruption – security failure: Covers business interruption caused by a security failure affecting a critical service provider’s computer systems.
  • Critical service provider business interruption – system failure: Reimburses you for your business interruption solely as a result of an actual interruption or degradation of a critical service provider's computer system which is caused by a system failure.
  • Non-IT critical service provider business interruption: Covers business interruption caused by disruption at a non-IT critical service provider, where the disruption results from a security failure or system failure.
  • Dependent customer business interruption: Covers business interruption resulting from a cyber incident affecting a dependent customer’s computer systems.
  • Loss of stock: Covers costs arising from damage to perishable stock caused by a security failure affecting temperature control or monitoring systems.
  • Cyber theft: Covers direct financial loss resulting from cyber theft.
  • Cyber theft of client or customer funds under the insured’s control: Covers customer financial loss resulting from security failure or social engineering theft of customer funds held in an account in the insured’s name.
  • Social engineering – customer’s financial assets: Covers customer financial loss resulting from social engineering theft from a customer’s bank account that the insured had access to.
  • Social engineering – insured’s financial assets: Covers direct financial loss resulting from social engineering theft of funds.
  • Social engineering – insured’s physical assets: Covers direct financial loss resulting from physical property being sent to an unintended third party through social engineering theft.
  • Invoice manipulation: Covers customer financial loss resulting from invoice manipulation.
  • Push payment theft: Covers push-payment loss resulting from push-payment theft.
  • Theft of director’s personal funds: Covers financial loss suffered by a director as a result of theft of personal funds.
  • Corporate identity theft: Covers direct financial loss resulting from corporate identity theft.
  • Court attendance compensation: Provides compensation linked to court attendance, subject to policy terms.
  • Employee indemnification: If requested, we will treat a claim made against an employee as if the claim were made against the insured.
  • Joint ventures/consortia: Extends cover to claims arising from participation in declared joint ventures or consortia.
  • Optional extended reporting period: Provides the right to purchase an extended reporting period for an additional premium.
  • Indemnity to other parties: Provides indemnity to other parties where their interest must be noted under the policy.
  • Reward coverage: Covers reward payments offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for relevant crimes.
  • Betterment: Covers reasonable and necessary costs to repair, replace, or upgrade computer systems where there is no reasonable alternative.
  • Bricking costs: Covers costs to replace computer systems rendered unusable as a result of a security failure.
  • Voluntary shutdown: Covers business interruption resulting from a voluntary shutdown necessitated by a security failure.
  • Regulatory shutdown: Covers business interruption resulting from a regulatory shutdown necessitated by a security failure.
  • Telecommunications fraud: Covers direct financial loss from unauthorised access to, or use of, telephone systems as a result of a security failure.
  • Crypto-jacking: Covers unauthorised access to, or use of, computer systems to mine or generate cryptocurrency or electronic tokens.
  • Crisis response costs: Covers reasonable costs incurred to investigate an incident, obtain legal advice, notify affected parties, manage reputational harm, and obtain specialist advice if extortion is involved.
  • Post-breach remediation costs: To reimburse post-breach costs to investigate the incident, identify weaknesses, implement improvements, and provide staff training to strengthen cyber resilience and reduce the risk of future incidents.
  • Tender disruption: Covers loss of bid participation costs where a cyber incident prevents participation in a tender, bid, or competitive process.
