A fascinating Insurance Times ‘Navigating excellence’ webinar took place on Wednesday 10 April aiming to look at what constitutes excellent service to brokers, with the 2024 Insurance Times broker survey results providing an insightful framework for the discussion.

An expert panel, facilitated by deputy editor of Insurance Times, Yiannis Kotoulas, was composed of John Batty from Bridge Insurance Brokers, Tom Florence from Pollensa Insurance Services, Savan Shah of Insurance Times and Markel’s divisional broking director, Jo Sykes.

“We’re a specialist, not a generalist, which allows us to have deep customer and sector expertise.” This was a key phrase used by Jo Sykes during the webinar, and a cornerstone of Markel’s people-first approach to their brokers and end customers.

The Insurance Times survey covers five key areas of insurer service for brokers, including quality of cover and relationship management, with Markel coming out top in 2024 with an overall 5-star rating.

The webinar features commentary from two highly-regarded brokers about their experiences dealing with both insurers and end customers. eTrading, claims, broker challenges, AI, and insurer service are all discussed, together with regular real-life examples of what’s important ‘at the sharp end’ of the industry.

Markel’s principle of enabling brokers to communicate with them in a way that suits the broker’s business model – be that face-to-face, on the phone or digitally – as well as how and why they invest in technology is discussed.

“We’re looking at technology solutions such as AI or large language models, but we are doing this from a back office perspective. We’re using technology to tool the underwriter with data, so their decisions are data led,” Jo said.

Throughout the discussion, head of research at Insurance Times Savan Shah, provides excerpts from the latest broker research, a study that has been running for the past 18 years, adding interest and wider-market context to the discussion.
