Katie works within the Regulatory team at Markel Law alongside Head of Regulatory, Deborah Nicholson, Lauren Wilson, Francesca Snape, Kay Sadler and Katherine Whittingham.
Katie joined Markel Law as a solicitor in July 2024, having completed her training contract at a previous firm in June 2024. Katie’s training and early experience included working alongside Senior Partners in both regulatory and criminal work, defending both businesses and individuals under investigation or facing regulatory action. She has a particular specialism in education as well as health and social care regulation.
She is experienced in Entity Regulation, Inquests, Fitness to Practice.
Katie is experienced in representing organisations and individuals regulated by Ofsted and/or the CQC, such as childminders and care homes. Katie provides support and advice to clients regarding their registration and compliance, including providing support with:
- Challenging inspection reports;
- Notices of proposal to cancel or refuse registration;
- Notices of decisions to cancel, refuse, suspend and vary registration;
- Appeals to the First-tier Tribunal
Katie has a particular interest in fitness to practise matters. Katie acts for a broad range of professionals before regulatory bodies, including:
- General Medical Council (GMC);
- General Dental Council (GDC);
- Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC);
- Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA);
- Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC);
- Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS);
- Teaching Regulation Agency (TRA);
- British Association of Counsellors and Psychotherapy (BACP);
- United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP); and
- Social Work England (SWE).
Katie represents and advises clients from the outset of proceeding at the investigation stage, through to substantive hearings before professional conduct panels, as well as interim order hearings.
Katie has advised therapists and dentists. Acting as lead Solicitor, she has successfully avoided a loss of registration for a number of clients.
Katie represents healthcare providers at Inquests where they have been granted Interested Person status. Katie works closely with providers to ensure that potential risk is mitigated wherever possible, with the ultimate goal to protect their interests.
