Markel promotes Mike Petchey to drive scheme growth

Markel has promoted from within by appointing Mike Petchey to head of schemes to lead its broker-led, specialist schemes proposition

With more than 20 years of industry experience, Petchey steps into his new role following six years in senior development positions at Markel. Most recently, he served as the head of corporate accounts, where he significantly contributed to formulating Markel’s schemes strategy and building successful broker partnerships across the UK.

In his new role, Petchey will head Markel’s dedicated schemes team. He will be tasked with enhancing Markel’s approach to schemes through collaborative and sector-specific propositions that aim to deliver value to brokers and their clients.

Commenting on the appointment, Jo Sykes, broker director, UK, stated: "Mike's promotion is a testament to his dedication in fostering long-term partnerships with brokers and his extensive technical expertise. Schemes are integral to our profitable growth strategy, and Mike's leadership will be pivotal in guiding our investment in technology and people. His efforts will ensure that schemes remain prominent on brokers' agendas, while aligning closely to our specialised, sector-driven strategy."

Markel’s proposition focuses on specialist, commercially focused schemes, underpinned by an award-winning claims service and a suite of value-added benefits, including legal, tax and wider business support. With an emphasis on co-created solutions and long-term broker collaboration, the company continues to be recognised for its high service standards.

“I’m proud to lead such a talented and experienced team at a time when schemes are increasingly an important part of our profitable growth strategy at Markel,” said Petchey. “We’re committed to delivering solutions that stand apart in the market and helping our brokers grow their businesses.”

Reporting into Sykes, the appointment confirms Markel’s long-term commitment to schemes as a core growth area, backed by continued investment in underwriting, governance, marketing and operational support.
