Corporate responsibility
We are committed to supporting charities, the local community and the environment. Our policy is to:
- Support local community projects through the direct involvement of employees by giving every employee up to three days paid leave a year to volunteer
- Encourage employees to seek new ways to support charitable and environmental causes, both individually and collectively
- Respond to national or global catastrophes and deprivation by assisting with staff fund-raising and matching donations or sponsorship through the Markel Match Programme
- Provide corporate donations of cash or time to selective welfare organisations and charitable bodies
- Organise specific fund-raising activities to supplement corporate donations
Our chosen charity is Carers Trust, an organisation created on the initiative of Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal in 1991. We have raised over £150,000 for this deserving cause since 2008 and as a social welfare insurer we are only too aware of the tremendous amount of work and responsibility taken on by individual carers. With a combination of corporate and staff fundraising initiatives, including dress down days, sponsorship and challenges, we generate funds for the charity so it can maintain its vital services supporting carers. Plus, for every new policy bound on our broker e-trading system, we contribute £1 to this great cause.
Environmental statement
Our goal is to minimise our environmental impact while adhering to our corporate philosophy, expressed in the Markel Style.
We will use only necessary consumables and we will recycle wherever possible. We review our
environmental performance continuously.
To help us achieve these goals, we stay fully informed about the latest environmental developments and practices.
