Markel and the Brownlee Foundation: Leeds volunteering day

Markel was proud to be the headline sponsor at the Brownlee Foundation school event in Leeds.

On 23rd May, Markel colleagues were out in force to support and cheer on 1,100 children from 41 local schools as they took part in one of the Brownlee Foundation triathlon days – a volunteering opportunity supported by Markel's International Community Network.

The sun was shining as our 39-strong team came together at the John Charles Centre for Sport in Leeds, helping children discover new passions and find the confidence they didn’t know they had.

From meeting and greeting to cheering and celebrating as the children triumphantly crossed the finished line, our volunteering roles were varied, and we were so proud to be part of a mission that helps create opportunities for young people to experience the joy of sport and demonstrate the power of working together for a greater purpose.

The Brownlee Foundation

Founded by Olympic triathletes Alistair and Jonny Brownlee, the Brownlee Foundation aims to inspire children to lead active, healthy lifestyles through triathlon. Markel’s partnership with the Foundation perfectly reflects our “People Powered” brand positioning, showcasing our commitment to empowering individuals and communities to achieve their best and win together.

The Foundation is running 15 triathlon events across the country in 2025, with more than 1,000 Key Stage 2 pupils participating in each event. As well as the Leeds event, Markel is the headline sponsor of the events in Salford and London, and we’re the joint sponsor for the events in Manchester and Birmingham.

These events are a meaningful way to connect with others, support local initiatives, and embody the Markel Style of collaboration and care, and we encourage Markel UK colleagues to use one of their three paid volunteering days to make a tangible difference in the lives of children experiencing the magic of their first triathlon.
