As the curtain closes on the 2020 awards season, the best has been saved until last for Markel UK. On the 9 December, we were absolutely thrilled to be crowned Commercial Lines Insurer of the Year and awarded Customer Champion at this year’s Insurance Times awards!

This tremendous achievement is one that we are all truly proud of.
We’ve worked hard over the last few years to disrupt the insurance market and strengthen our brokers’ role with their SME customers. Restructuring our branch and claims operations means that brokers can now easily get quick decisions from underwriters and claims are handled with a blend of efficiency and personal touch.
We also know that brokers value the in-house tax and legal services that wrap around our specialist sector insurance solutions to create a holistic business support offer for SMEs. It’s an approach that aligns with Markel’s ‘Expect More’ value proposition and allows brokers to expand their customer offer to a business-focused consultative relationship.
Insurance Times award winners are voted for by brokers and we are proud that our efforts have been recognised so clearly by our partners. Having successfully increased our broker rankings every year, we are working hard to maintain and improve the high standards we always set ourselves.
We were also delighted to be awarded the Customer Champion award. The win centred around our response to Covid-19 and how our Expect More promise across our insurance, tax and law services kicked into action when our customers needed us most.
With UK SMEs in a state of flux, Markel did not abandon its customers in their time of need. During the early days of lockdown Markel communicated its position on business continuity and the impact on Markel policies to be absolutely clear on its insurance-coverage position to help brokers respond to their customers as quickly as possible.
Markel’s strategy was to settle valid claims quickly whilst also supporting customers whose claims may not have been so clear-cut, or even invalid.
Markel also made legal support freely available to over 800,000 businesses to navigate furlough and find alternatives to redundancy, securing businesses and thousands of jobs during lockdown. Markel’s tax consultancy team also helped UK SMEs claim over £10m of tax credits during the lockdown period, generating valuable cash flow which they could inject back into their business at a crucial time.
Not content with winning two awards, Markel UK was also recognised with the silver award in the Insurer Innovation of the Year category. Markel’s entry focussed on our swift and innovative solution support for over 1,000 childcare providers when Covid-19 was putting the care sector under great stress.
In a difficult and turbulent year, we are truly humbled by this recognition. We would like to extend our thanks to the brokers who voted us Commercial Lines Insurer of the Year and reiterate Markel UK’s ongoing commitment to championing our customers and delivering our Expect More promise.
