Markel Care 3rd Sector Awards 2022

This year’s Markel 3rd Sector Care Awards took place at the Grand Hotel in Birmingham on Friday 4 March, with Angela Rippon hosting the event for the first time ever. This annual event shines the spotlight on so many worthy individuals and organisations that improve the lives of people with tremendous challenges up and down the country.

Over the time we have been supporting this event, we’ve seen the awards grow and highlight incredible examples of hard work, dedication and commitment from individuals and organisations right across the third sector.

We were delighted to be back in-person after a very difficult two years and, as we all know, the impact of Covid has hit the third sector more than most. This was our sixth year attending and it was a real privilege for Markel to be the headline sponsor of this remarkable ceremony once again.

The values behind everything that we do at Markel UK have always been centred on ‘Expect More’. There is no doubt that all of the finalists who were put forward for awards, as well as those in the sector who attended, spend their lives encapsulating this philosophy. We were therefore honoured that Markel UK sponsored the Making a Difference Award and Markel Law sponsored the Contribution to the Sector Award, with our broker partners Azets sponsoring the Leadership Award and Towergate sponsoring Community Engagement and End of Life Care Awards. The London Homeless Welfare Team, who do great work supporting those in London who are homeless in so many ways, took home the Making a Difference and Contribution to the Sector awards, making them one of the big winners of the night.

Having representatives present and attend from all areas of our business was not only a great way to demonstrate our commitment to the sector, but also demonstrated the breadth of services Markel offers to support our care and charity policyholders.

Though planning proves more challenging in today’s uncertain political and financial environment, the energy and vision within the sector does not wavier; whether that is planning to develop new services or working in collaboration with a new partner, diversifying funding, investing in staff, or strengthening boards.

The sector’s ability to look for diverse ways to support people and improve when faced with increased demand even as budgets tighten is truly inspiring, and this was clearly evident when we heard the winners sharing their stories with Angela Rippon and speaking with guests during the afternoon. One story in particular that stood out was David Higham from The Well Communities, which supports people recovering from drug and alcohol addiction through therapy, counselling, peer mentoring, employment training and social activities. Read his journey here.

The ceremony opened and closed with moving performances from the Choir with No Name, a choir which was set up in 2008 for homeless and marginalised people, which left not many dry eyes in the room – a fitting reflection for the essence of the day.

It was a real privilege for Markel and our broker partners to attend the awards and be in the company of so many selfless individuals and we look forward to continuing our dedication to the sector in 2022 and beyond.

Markel is widely recognised as a key supporter to the care sector through the provision of specialist insurance, legal, tax and consultancy capability. One such capability we provide to the sector is our specialist care consultancy, Markel Care Practitioners, who are there to help across a range of issues such as risk management, inspection preparation and continuity planning.
