Impact on Markel UK policies

We know that you’re seeing an increasing number of queries from your customers during this period, so we want to be absolutely clear on our insurance coverage position to help you respond as efficiently as possible. 

The ABI (Association of British Insurers) advises that: “Standard business insurance policies are designed and priced to cover standard risks and are therefore unlikely to provide cover for the effects of global pandemics like Covid-19.”

As a result and in line with the rest of the insurance market, the vast majority of Markel UK policies would not provide business interruption cover for the COVID-19, but some absolutely will do. It is important that each insurance policy is reviewed on a case-by-case basis and the Markel team is available to discuss this with you and to help navigate the impacts this current situation is creating.

The information below clarifies the current situation regarding new business, renewals, extensions and MTAs.

New Business

For all new business policies, we will be providing this transparency by including a full exclusion for COVID-19.  We are committed to reviewing our exclusion wording and application over the coming period, to ensure that as the situation develops we are able to reflect the certainty we give to our customers and distributors.

Renewals

For all renewals, we are including a full exclusion for COVID-19.  This ensures we are fully transparent with customers about coverage.  We will review and adapt our approach, as the impact of this event evolves.

Extension of cover

Extensions of cover are treated as a new contract of insurance.  Therefore, for all extensions of cover, we will be including a full exclusion for COVID-19. 

Mid Term Adjustments (MTAs)

All MTAs are treated on a case-by-case basis. 

We are applying a common sense approach to all MTA requests and our regional teams are available should you have any queries with regards to any mid-term changes or adjustments that are being requested.

For clarity, we are not looking to use MTAs as a reason for applying inappropriate restrictions on existing coverage. We are simply ensuring we provide adequate evaluation of the increased risk being requested, relative to the COVID-19 event.

Any exclusion for COVID-19 will only be applied to new property added to an existing policy and will not apply to an entire existing policy.

Ongoing amendments and adjustments

We are also working hard to evolve our understanding of the possible direct and indirect implications of COVID-19, on all aspects of our cover to policyholders.  As we are able to confirm and clarify coverages across all potential scenarios, we will update our communications accordingly.
