Care practitioner consultancy

Bespoke care practitioner consultancy is available to policyholders, either on-site or desktop, on a range of regulatory, risk and commercial matters. We recognise that smaller companies and traders do not necessarily have the in-house personnel to advise and assist in their decision making. We have 30 specialist care practitioners from across all client groups who not only understand the key issues being faced across the sector, but can also provide bespoke sector-specific support to those caring for children and vulnerable adults.

Case studies

  • Inadequate fire safety checks

    The health and safety director of an organisation that provides supported living accommodation to vulnerable adults was responsible for ensuring the safety of the premises.

    A fire broke out and the fire alarm did not sound as it was not in working order. The impact of the fire was severe and resulted in injuries to several service users. Due to the lack of adequate maintenance and safety checks, an investigation was brough by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) into the actions of the director. The policy responded, by covering the legal costs incurred by the director during the investigation.

  • A risk management audit for a not-for-profit company

    A not-for-profit company providing residential, therapeutic and educational services to individuals over the age of 18, who fall on the borderline of learning disability and complex emotional needs, worked closely with Markel Care Practitioners on conducting a risk management audit.

    A number of processes were observed, and as a result a number of recommendations were put forward with the organisation implementing a number of improvements. This service supported the policyholder in recognising and risk managing possible shortcomings in order to reduce and mitigate future claims.

  • Damage to a foster carer’s house

    A foster child experiencing significant behavioural issues caused malicious damage to a foster carer’s house, including damage to internal doors and walls. The foster carer attempted to claim through their household policy but it did not cover malicious damage by foster children.

    Because the insured’s policy was tailored to foster care agencies, the claim was covered and paid for the cost of repairs.

  • Business growth support

    An independent living provider for 16- to 18-year-olds, wanted to ensure it was competitive and able to effectively communicate its unique services, its ethos for young people, the skills of its staff and the quality of its provision within the commissioner documentation.

    The organisation worked with Markel Care Practitioners on training specifically focused on attracting referrals and seeking tenders. As a result, the client won two tenders.
